Team Neighbor Beginner Surf tips for this summer!
Sets usually come in 3 to 4 wave
groups.... But it varies depending on the swell...
I like to take one of the last 2 waves.... Everyone tries to position for
the first ones...
If you think ahead you can have the last ones all to your self....
Paddle to the peak!! Don't let it come to you!
You go to it....
Keep your eye on the wave don't just start paddling for it....
The wave can change when your not looking..Try to match the speed of the wave
by paddling smoothly into the wave,(Take 2 extra paddles just to make sure
you catch it) .. Try to take off in that slight angle. Favoring left or right...Really
pay attention to which way is better... Pop up as fast as you can, by placing
your hand beneath your chest and pushing up, while swinging your legs into
position....Take your hands off your rails quickly! (Do not stand like a skier!)
Put your rear foot
over your fins and the other foot goes comfortablely forward...You should
now be standing sides ways..But twisting forward.. Stay low and lean forward
as the wave starts to push you...Knees bent...only stand up tall when you
are turning...keep your arms out for balance...lead with your eyes and head
where you want to go...your body will follow...look down the wave and try
to make it.(Don't be a wussy!)..you can use your hand in the water to stabilize
yourself...by dragging it in the wave as well...
Remember...
(If your going straight you can be up towards the nose more, But!!! if you
turn you must get back towards the tail...if you fall kick your board in the
opposite direction you are going...then reach over your head with both arms
in front of your face and grab the back of your neck. this makes an arm helmet!!!
and when your under water put one hand up to break the surface just incase
your board is above your head!!!!)
Have a good time out there! Its supposed to be fun!
(When your a beginner its good to find a spot that is not crowded, other Surfers
like to give Beginners a hard time because it makes them feel better about
their crappy skills....) If you practice enough, and learn the rules you will
be ready to surf any where you want!
Surfing
is more of a life style then a sport!
Be careful and always wear a leash, Neighbor
Tim
